There was little demand for garden furniture back in the 1960s with the exception of deck chairs and a few tubular framed relaxers and hammocks but Gerald Hall (original founder of GardenSite) noticed an increasing demand from Churches and other Societies for carving and engraving on benches to celebrate the life of some of those recently deceased. Barlow Tyrie was the only company offering this bespoke service so Gerald ordered in 3 or 4 Braintree and London benches each year to both sells in the store and show potential clients the quality of the benches that they could have carved with their loved one's name and dates. Gerald and the Braintree Bench have both long gone now but that legacy still lives on.
