Patio heaters come in many shapes and sizes but they all have one aim, to introduce warmth on cool days and chilly evenings so that you and any guests can enjoy being outside on your patio and in the garden for the maximum amount of time.
Electric vs gas powered patio heaters
When it comes to buying a patio heater, the main major thing to consider is whether you'd like it to be electric or gas powered. Both offer their own advantages and are suited for different gardens and needs. Electric patio heaters are slightly less portable, as they obviously need a plug socket close by to be hooked up to. Although, this is works out to be an advantage, as they're plug and play without the need of sourcing gas, like you'd need to with a gas-powered patio heater. Needing to purchase a portable LPG or propane tank is an extra thing to consider, but this means that your patio heater doesn't need to be close to a plug socket and is highly more portable to move around the garden to where it's needed, especially useful for long gardens where you may have a patio or seating area further up the garden, away from the house and any amenities.
In terms of heat output, gas-powered patio heaters come out on top due to the more effective method of combustion. Gas is also generally cheaper than electric per Kwh too, but obviously isn't as convenient as you'll first need to source a gas tank, and when it runs out, top it up - unlike an electric patio heater which you can pretty much power 24/7 non-stop when connected to a plug socket. It pretty much comes down to convenience, and your personal preference!
Are patio heaters safe?
The short and easy answer is - yes! All of the patio heaters for sale at GardenSite are safe in terms of regulations and build quality, conforming to UK regulations. In terms of the heat element, for the majority of the patio heaters that we sell, the heating element or flame burners are encased behind glass tubing, an emitter, and/or a cage surround. If you're concerned about children or pets getting too close to the heat output, a tall patio heater (instead of a small table version), or even a wall-mounted model is recommended in order for main element to be out of the way from any possible contact.
