Traditionally crafted from clay, with a plump body and a tall narrow chimney, more contemporary versions are steel, some with 360° coverage. Filled with flaming logs they are very effective heaters and many are fitted with grills on which food can be cooked.
La Hacienda firepits perform much the same function although these are open metal dishes or cages. Some such as the Moho firepit have a wonderful cast iron patina to add to their attraction, while there are other modern fibreglass designs fuelled by gas rather than logs.
