If you're keen to start growing root vegetables, the 1.8m Deep Root Planter from Forest will be a splendid acquisition to your outdoor space and gardening needs.
This rectangular wooden planter offers an impressive 180cm wide growing space with a 42cm depth, ideal for those deep root crops such as potatoes, carrots and parsnips to grow at home.
Compact yet spacious, the planter is perfect if you're not fully mobile, as you don't have to bend down to the floor to repot and tend to your growing plants. Chunky legs provide ample support to what will become a substantial and hopefully very productive addition to your garden.
Durability is guaranteed with 70% FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified timber, which has been pressure treated to give added resistance to weathering. To prove the reliability of the pressure treatment, a 15-year guarantee against rot is included as standard. But don't be put off by the treatment, as it's still perfectly safe to grow edible foods inside.
The planter's soil capacity is an impressive 350-400 litres (approx) so that all of your carrots and parsnips will have a lovely depth of compost in which to develop and grow.

A really good planting box.
I am really pleased with the planter which, instead of filling with compost, I have filled with pots of flowers and shrubs. I gave only 4 stars for delivery as the delivery man wanted to leave it outside the house. He, reluctantly, lifted it into the hall for me. I asked him if he could take it through to the back garden but he said he wasn't allowed to. As a lone female this could have given me problems. However, I am lucky enough to have good neighbours.

Great Value for money - Great delivery driver too!!
Arrived on time , driver happy to carry through to the rear of the property . Only took 20 minutes to put together . Would recommend you put some sort of liner inside it before you fill it with compost ,just to make the timber to last a bit longer. Don't underestimate how much compost you'll need to fill this ....

Very good planter
Very pleased with this product. Managed to assemble it on my own but would have been easier with two people. Easy to pre-drill holes. I've painted it with garden fence paint so it looks good against the fence. Cill is a nice finishing touch. Pleased I bought the bigger size. Lots of plans for herbs and vegetables.

Good product
After a grumpy start, ( was not told product out of stock ) now the grumps have gone And I'm thinking of purchasing another. Will I get carrots 1 foot long I'm wondering..
What is the soil depth of the trough? What is the compost capacity? Are drainage holes already drilled?
We Replied:Dear Jennifer Thank you for your question. The planter has capacity of approx 400 litres of soil / compost and a 40cm planting height. It does not come with drainage holes, I would suggest you use a bed or stones or gravel or broken pots as the water will drain out of the planter naturally. Saturday 12th, April, 2014Is the timber sawn as I do not want my 6 year old grandson to get splinters when planting seeds etc. Also can you recommend a good liner and the best compost to fill it with?
We Replied:Dear Graham Thank you for your question. This product is not 'rough sawn' but planed so fundamentally there should not be any issues. Having said that it is wood and it is a natural product so I could not guarantee you will not get a splinter. My best advice would be to get your grandson to wear gloves to be on the safe side. Should you wish to contact us further or to place an order, please call us on 0121 355 7701. Thank you for using our online Q&A system. Kind regards Robert Hall

Friday 17th, April, 2015I am interested in buying the 1.8m and 1m planters. I am female, 68 years old, so do not have a lot of strength for lifting and holding heavy weights when doing self assembly. I have an electric drill and lots of DIY experience. Do you think I can assemble these myself?
We Replied:Dear Caroline Thank your for your question. You may require a second person at times. I have sent you the link to the instructions for you to have a look at https://www.gardensite.co.uk/pdfs/c88536dd26740a196d615fce1d2a131d.pdf Should you wish to contact us further or to place an order, please call us on 0121 355 7701. Sunday 03rd, April, 2016I have just assembled the deep root planter (1.8m). Before putting in compost, what should be put at the bottom of the planter e,g, gravel for drainage or some kind of plastic with holes in?
We Replied:Dear Anthony Thank you for your question. A base layer before the compost isn't essential however we have found that placing stones will help with the drainage. Should you wish to contact us further or to place an order, please call us on 0121 355 7701. Thank you for using our online Q&A system. Kind regards Lauren
Friday 22nd, April, 2016Do you need to use a liner or can you just fill this planter with soil/compost?
We Replied:Dear Andy Thank you for your question. The planter does not need a liner as the timber is pressure treated. If you want to use one simply use some weed control fabric. Should you wish to contact us further or to place an order, please call us on 0121 355 7701. Thank you for using our online Q&A system. Kind regards Nathan James Dodd
Saturday 28th, May, 2016What is the thickness of the wood used for the base and sides?

Thursday 28th, July, 2016What is the distance between the bottom of the two centre legs?
We Replied:Dear Paul Thank you for your question. The distance between the inside of the middle legs, front to back, is 518mm (approx. 20.4 ins) Should you wish to contact us further or to place an order, please call us on 0121 355 7701. Thank you for using our online Q&A system. Kind regards Lauren
Friday 28th, July, 2017I cannot bend to weed but would like to grow some climbers e.g. clematis and roses etc. Will the overhang allow me to add a trellis to the back of this planter?
We Replied:Dear Caroline Thank you for your question. This sounds like a great idea! The overhang sections are installed individually when assembling at home, so you could leave the back overhang piece off in order to attach a trellis there. You would just need to ensure that the trellis is secured enough to the legs of the planter in order to keep it held on tight when climbers start to spread out over it. We would just need to add though, if you were to make any modifications to the planter, it could void your guarantee, so any changes are made at your own discretion. Should you wish to contact us further or to place an order, please call us on 0121 355 7701. Kind regards, Andy
Thursday 24th, August, 2017Can we assemble the planters and attach the trellis panels to the top using Forest hinged fencing brackets?
We Replied:Dear Caroline Thank you for your question. Attaching the trellis to the top of the planter could work, however, it would depend on the size of the trellis, as over time when plants start to climb and grow over it, the trellis could become too heavy and topple over. If you do decide to attach it this way, it might be an idea to use some plant ties to secure the trellis to the fence also, just to ensure it stays upright as the plants mature around it. Should you wish to contact us further or to place an order, please call us on 0121 355 7701. Kind regards, Andy.
Friday 25th, August, 2017What should you fill this planter with in order to grow root crops? Should any soil or compost be replaced every year?
We Replied:Dear Bob Thank you for your question. We'd recommend filling with a good quality, nutrient rich compost like Miracle Gro: https://www.gardensite.co.uk/garden-care/scotts-evergreen-miracle-gro-potting-compost-mix-8-litre.htm Ideally, you should change the compost every year or you can add manure to enrich it. Should you wish to contact us further or to place an order, please call us on 0121 355 7701. Thank you for using our online Q&A system. Kind regards Lauren
Tuesday 14th, November, 2017What type of pressurised wood is used for these planters?
