Nelson Asked:
I am trying to repair my old concrete pond which has been leaking .Somebody has suggested that I should use G4 to seal it. A sealant was originally applied to the concrete, do I need to remove it before applying the new G4?
We Replied:
Dear Nelson
Thank you for your question.
As G4 should only be used on a porous surface, all the old sealant will need to be scraped off.

Doug Maw Asked:
I have quite a bad leak from a concrete pond which has previously been coated with G4. The surface is quite mucky and the old G4 is peeling in places, but I can't see any obvious cracks in the cement. I intend to pressure jet it clean, peel off the old G4 where I can and recoat the whole pond with new G4. Should the new G4 bond OK on the old stuff?
We Replied:
Dear Doug
Thank you for your question.
It is advised that G4 is only used on a porous surface, so if you can remove as much of the old sealant the better this will work a lot better.

Sue king Asked:
We have just built a waterfall and would like to seal it with G4. As we have fish in the pond our question is: do we have to remove the fish before we paint the waterfall or can we leave them in the pond?
We Replied:
Dear Sue
Thank you for your question.
You cannot allow any uncured G4 pond sealer to enter the pond water as it is toxic to aquatic life. As the waterfall will require several washes before it is safe for use this will be very difficult to achieve.

Carole Elmer Asked:
I know someone who used G4 on concrete, starting at 9am on a very hot day. They came back 3 hours later and applied a 2nd coat. 3 hours later it was fully hardened. The following day at 10am we had rain for 4 hours. Would this have affected the waterproofing for the waterfall?
We Replied:
Dear Carole
Thank you for your question.
After the final coat, if rain is suspected, we advise you to cover the area as any uncured G4 can be compromised by rain. From the information you provided the area should have been cured. For verification we would recommend calling G4 on their helpline number 0208 778 0071.

I wouldn't be using this sealant for a pond but rather to waterproof the inside of a newly built rectangular planter which has been made out of breeze blocks. I intend to apply this pond sealant after rendering the breeze blocks. Is G4 is toxic to plants?

Polly Asked:
I have a an oak whisky barrel that I would like to use as a small pond/water feature. I was considering G4 as the product to seal the wood as it is porous. Previous posts have mentioned G4 can only be used on concrete but also say on porous material. Can I use G4 to seal the oak barrel. If not, can you recommend an alternative to seal the wood that would not be harmful to fish/pond plants.
We Replied:
Dear Polly
Thank you for your question.
Unfortunately we do not have any sealer for wooden ponds, people usually favour using rubber or pvc liners to ensure a watertight unit.

Ben Asked:
I've been sealing the fountain above my pond with the water flow turned off. However, a small amount of G4 sealant was washed into the water. I've netted out as much as I can and there isn't any fish in my pond just yet. Do I need to completely empty the pond or will any particles cure and just sink to the bottom?
We Replied:
Dear Ben
Thank you for your question.
We would suggest a complete water change as this product is toxic to aquatic life.

Mike Burne Asked:
I'm restoring a cement-like reconstituted stone 19th Century bird bath. The surface is porous and also has deep cracks. What is the finish of dried G4 on something like cement - is it matte, eggshell or gloss? I'm considering filling the cracks with Milliput, will G4 adhere to this adequately?
We Replied:
Dear Mike
Thank you for your question.
G4 is very hard to adhere to epoxy unless it is really sanded down with 40-80 grit paper and the whole unit is perfectly dry. Even then you would need to use three coats of the G4. We would recommend filling the cracks with small amounts of concrete so you can ensure the G4's adhesion.

Adrian Maudsley Asked:
How long should mortar joints be allowed to set before G4 can be applied and is there a minimum temperature below which it will not cure?
We Replied:
Dear Adrian
Thank you for your question.
Mortar generally takes around 28 days to fully cure so you should wait around 21-28 days before using G4. The product does not specify a temperature but does say it can be used in cold weather, however we would recommend that you avoid days when rain is forecast.
