JOHN MACDONALD Asked:
Do the uprights of the pergola need to be concreted into the ground?
We Replied:
Dear John
Thank you for your question.
The uprights do not need to be concreted into the ground but it is advised for the best stability. You can also use soft ground metal spikes if concrete is not an option.

Sheen Asked:
Is the wood strong enough for me to hang a hammock chair from it? What kind of weight can one of the top cross beams take?
We Replied:
Dear Sheen
Thank you for your question.
To be honest this is not something we or the manufacture could tell you. The top beams are 9cm x 4.5cm thick. In theory i think it should be okay but you need to ensure it is well anchored to the ground.

Elaine Asked:
Is it better to put the pergola posts into the ground just using concrete or concrete them in the ground using the post supports?
We Replied:
Dear Elaine
Thank you for your question.
I suggest either concrete them in or use the post supports. You need not concrete in the post supports unless you really want to.

I am interested in the Forest Ultima Pergola kit 3.6 x 3.6 m. On looking at the dimensions on your website they appear to be for a different model - could you please clarify?

It is the same model. The drawing shows internal dimensions between the posts and not full external dimensions.

Raj Hothi Asked:
I want to install this pergola on Indian sandstone patio. What is the best method to ensure proper installation? I will be using it as frame for climbing plants as well. Will it be sufficient to attach the posts to large planters and fill it with soil ?
We Replied:
Dear Raj
Thank you for your question.
I would suggest either using post supports which you can bolt into your slabs.
https://www.gardensite.co.uk/Garden_Structures/Forest_Fencefast_Easyfit_90105mm_Post_Base_Support.htm
Or you can attach good sized planters and a trellis.

Roger Asked:
Can the posts be fitted on to the top of a patio using metal foot brackets ? Thank you
We Replied:
Dear Roger
Thank you for your question.
Yes, it could be but you would need to order the foot brackets which are an option at an additional cost (unless you have them already). You will then have to secure the brackets into your patio, depending on the material.

Dave Alger Asked:
I'm interested in your 3.6m x 3.6m pergola. As I live in Portugal, it will be necessary for you to deliver it to my shipping agent.
We Replied:
Dear Dave
Thank you for your comment.
Due to the size and nature of these products they don't come packed as such, e.g in a cardboard box. The timber pieces are strapped and bundled together.
The total size would be 271 x 38 x 23cm with an approximate weight of 148kg.

The height of this Pergola Kit is 2.8m, which would be a little too high for our requirements. Is it possible to have it ordered to a height of 2.5m at the back and 2.0m at the front?

Thank you for your question.
Unfortunately, we are not able to make this product to bespoke specifications. However, it would be fairly simple to do this yourself.

David Miller Asked:
I am interested in the 3.6 x 3.6m model, in the instructions the distance between the posts is 2.86m, I want to increase this to 3.04m. Given that the support beams are 3.6m this should be OK, it will mean that the overhang distance will be reduced. Please could you confirm that this would be a viable option?
We Replied:
Dear David
Thank you for your question.
Essentially you can adjust this pergola to the size you want. We would however recommend against this as it will affect the structural integrity.

Annette Houlton Asked:
I want to erect the pergola over a paved area, is it possible to bolt it to paving slabs?
We Replied:
Dear Annette
Thank you for your question.
If you are choosing to bolt them onto paving slabs, we would recommend using the easy-fit fencebase bolt down for £9.99. This is shown as an option at the bottom of the product page and here:
https://www.gardensite.co.uk/Landscaping/Forest_EasyFit_Fencebase_90105mm.htm
The slabs should be fine to drill into as long as you keep clear of the edge and take your time.

Gary Asked:
Does the timber need treating with anything? If so, what is recommended?
We Replied:
Dear Gary
Thank you for your question.
The wood is already pressure treated and comes with a 15 year guarantee from the manufacturer Forest. You can paint it if you want to change the colour (e.g Ronseal, Sadolin or Cuprinol) or use a clear treatment to stop the wood turning to a grey colour, which it does after a few years.

Gary Asked:
I need a advice on the use of a clear coating for the tanalised timber. Some information I have read is to not coat the timber for at least a year as it has to dry out first. Other information suggests that a clear varnish such as Ronseal is fine to use, yet others say that it is too hard and could crack when the wood expands or blister because of the tanalisation. Can you please recommend a good "CLEAR" matt or satin coating I could use that will not cause problems with the wood?
We Replied:
Dear Gary
Thank you for your question.
Forest timber items are pressure impregnated with Osmose Naturewood preservative, this contains copper and an organic co-biocide and will preserve wood against fungal decay and insect attack.
Stains and water repellents may be applied immediately if required, providing you follow the manufacturer's instructions. If we were to recommend a preservative, we would recommend something like Ronseal Clear Total Wood Preserver or similar that can be found in general DIY stores.

Steve Asked:
When placing and fixing the rafters on top, do they have to be placed so they have an equal overhang on each side? Alternatively, due to its location and having to fix uprights closer together, can I have a small overhang on all the rafters on one side and a much longer overhang for all the rafters on the opposite side?
We Replied:
Dear Steve
Thank you for your question.
Yes, that would be possible as you can place the rafters where you like.

Terry Asked:
I want to put this pergola in a slightly smaller space in one direction i.e. a rectangular shape rather than a square. Looking at previous answers, this does seem possible. My question is: are the pieces pre-drilled or can I make these adjustments without too much difficulty?
We Replied:
Dear Terry
Thank you for your question.
None of our Forest products come pre-drilled and we recommend that they are installed as per the design specification and instructions so that they retain their structural integrity.

Carl Robertson Asked:
Is it possible to attach a canopy to this pergola?
We Replied:
Dear Carl
Thank you for your question.
Technically yes, although it depends on what kind of canopy top you have in mind. We have one of these pergolas on our show site and have bolted polycarbonate (plastic) glazing sheets to the roof and used silicone gel (similar to what's used around bathtubs) between the gaps to create a waterproof roof. However, please note that any major alterations to the structure or integrity may void any guarantee of the product.

Vish Asked:
What would be the total width between the posts including one of your bolt downs on either post? Is a concrete base that's 3300 wide large enough?
We Replied:
Dear Vish
Thank you for your question.
The distance from inside a post to inside the other post is 2860mm and the posts are 90mm thick so the distance from the outside of the post to the outside of the opposing post is 3050mm.
This means the pergola would fit quite neatly within a 3300 x 3300mm base.

Tina Asked:
Is it possible to attach trellis to this pergola and what’s the best way to go about it?
We Replied:
Dear Tina
Thank you for your question.
We would recommend using U shaped clips from your local hardware store which would be secured to the posts first and then the trellis can be secured to them. Depending on the size of the trellis, you may need additional support posts in the middle.
