Dear Robin Thank you for your question. The UV lamp cannot be tested outside of the main unit once the unit is assembled. Turn the power on and look at the viewing port located on the top of the ballast unit, a small blue light should be seen when covered over. Turn the power on and look at the viewing port located on the top of the ballast unit, a small blue light should be seen when covered over or wait until after dark and the viewing port should glow blue.
