Why are Biorb/Biubes made from Acrylic and not glass?
Acrylic is 10 times stronger than glass, in fact acrylic which is one inch thick (32mm) is actually bullet resistant. Acrylic is also noticabley clearer, this is because it has a transparency of 93% whereas glass only allows 70% of light to pass through, and when glass is thick is has a green tint to it. So it's like watching your fish in high definition with a Biorb.
What's the benefit of a Biorb's filter?
All biorb filters are the same, this means that when replacing a filter you won't buy the wrong size as there is only one size. As the filter is situated at the bottom of the aquarium it means that it picks up alot more waste than traditional filters, this is because waste naturally settles at the bottom of an aquarium, basically it filters where the most filtration is needed.
It takes seconds to change a Biorb filter and you'll only need to change it once every 4 - 6 weeks.
What is ceramic media and what does it do?
Ceramic media is in every Biorb model, it is made by firing clay to 1500 degrees celcius. It's extremely porous and totally inert. The unique shape of ceramic media makes it easy for water to circulate around and through it. This is important because it gives bacteria the surface area of a football pitch to colonise on, and as it feeds on fish waste it means that it will keep the aquarium healthy.
How good is the oxygenation in a Biorb Aquarium?
The oxygenation in Biorb aquariums is second to none, this is due to design of the filter system. The University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover performed independant tests against a standard rectangular aquarium and this is their thoughts:
"The oxygen concentrations in the biOrb aquarium were higher than in the rectangular aquarium. This oxygen concentrations in the biOrb aquarium were probably higher due to the vigorous aeration and turbulence. This keeps the gases in equilibrium with the air above the water surface. This caused the gases to be well distributed and redundant gases to be easily expelled."
What if I don't like the colour trim on my Biorb?
That's fine, with the Biorb 30 and 60 tanks there are plenty of different colour swap tops available which you can change simply, the Baby biorb too can be changed but has a smaller choice of colours. The easiest to swap is the Biube, but at present there is only a choice of black or silver unless you wanted to change it to the "clear" version. Unfortunately the Biorb Life and Flow ranges cannot be changed as the coloured part is an integral part of the aquarium, but they do all look beautiful in fairness.
What about green water in the biorb?
Green water is a common problem with any aquarium, but there are ways to reduce this. When first setting up your tank you will almost always get what’s called an algae bloom, this is due to high volume of nutrients in fresh water which algae feeds on. Algae will also thrive on light, whether artificial or natural, so we always advise to keep your aquarium away from windows or very light areas like a conservatory. When performing a water change, even though it will only be 10-25% you will be adding these nutrients in again, so you may find you get more algae a couple of days after doing this, the best thing to do is wipe surface algae off the sides of your Biorb with a cleaning pad, always use one which is designed for acrylic as glass scrapers and pads will scratch acrylic tanks.
Although green water is sometimes unavoidable, with a Biorb you will not get the issues you do with a traditional goldfish bowl like stagnant water or major algae problems.

The globe is manufactured from Plexiglas acrylic and because of its larger water capacity, biOrb provides fish with approximately ten times more space than a traditional bowl. In 1999 Reef One, the manufacturer's of biOrb Aquariums asked themselves a question, is there a way to make aquariums simpler to maintain? They began to think about aquarium design in new ways, taking into account what fish need and they also thought about you, the home aquarist. They wanted to make sure they got the fundamentals correct.
Next they set out to make the best quality products they could, they wanted to make sure that they were so good that customers would want to tell their friends about them. They believe just like we do, that it all starts with a great product. We believe in a thing called quality and we believe that difficult is worth the effort. Today, there are well over a million biOrb owners worldwide.
